UML modelling hi guys! Am modelling student management system for a primary school. I wanted to know if there is any one out there ever modelled one(ERM, conceptual class diagram and deteailed class diagram) of that kind. it will also be very useful if i could get a site with those refference materials about UML Modelling. please help me out. UML for Ruby
UML for Ruby Could any one recommend some good UML/modeling tools for Ruby and Ruby on Rails? Edit: would be nice to generate code from UML diagrams as well as generate diagrams from existing code. What do you mean by "for Ruby"? UML is language-agnostic. Based on your comment - UML is a generic, language-independent model. It's designed (from my understanding) to be used before an implementation language is chosen, so not all of the UML elements have corresponding elements in all languages (eg - interfaces in Ruby). However, that doesn't mean that you can't make UML models and implement the system they describe in Ruby. I recommend StarUML for all UML needs. Do you meant to ask for a tool which transforms UML into ruby code? I dont think there is any at the moment. implements in UML
implements in UML Any idea how I express 'implements' in UML? I'm trying to write some actionscript classes in starUML with the help of this handy little template tool: http://blog.flashmech.net/2008/09/generate-actionscript-3-with-staruml/ I want the tool to generate 'implements Iblah' in the classes but am not sure what connector to use, Aggregation? Dependecy? Any help much appreciated. On UML and whiteboarding
On UML and whiteboarding I try to produce correct UML when we have our design/whiteboarding sessions but my attempt at well structured UML ALWAYS degrades into uml-looking-but-understandable-to-those-in-the-room-with-a-little-explanation. But is this good enough for the consummate engineer? Do you always produce well-structured UML in your whiteboard sessions? What advise do you have for the developer who might not think it that important lest he sees it in a design pattern book and have no idea wtf is going on. I never use UML in my design sessions. It's always free-form. Then, depending on the project, we circle back and convert that into much more structured UML design when creating the "final" spec docs that we developers will code from. It's been my experience that it tends to hinder design sessions to much to focus on proper form, especially when half or more of the people

Is UML practical?
Is UML practical? In college I've had numerous design and UML oriented courses, and I recognize that UML can be used to benefit a software project, especially use-case mapping, but is it really practical? I've done a few co-op work terms, and it appears that UML is not used heavily in the industry. Is it worth the time during a project to create UML diagrams? Also, I find that class diagrams are generally not useful, because it's just faster to look at the header file for a class. Specifically which diagrams are the most useful? Edit: My experience is limited to small, under 10 developer projects. Edit: Many good answers, and though not the most verbose, I belive the one selected is the most balanced. Generic work-flow and DFDs can be very useful for complex processes. All other diagramming (ESPECIALLY UML) has, in my experience, without exception been a painful waste of time

You can get it very cheap as 2nd hand from amazon or ebay. Third Edition covers UML 2.0. Even if you had an example to work from, UML is too complicated to just copy. Definitely agree with John on this one...if you're just going to use somebody else's diagram, it's going to be meaningless and useless to you. ...in addition to the book he suggests, you might also try The Elements of UML 2.0 Style. applying UML in PHP
applying UML in PHP most of the books that I have read on UML uses the Java language to show examples (one notable book is the ICONIX book from Apress entitle UML-Driven Object Modeling with ICONIX). The book follows several steps using UML diagrams and then implemented in JSP. Are there methodologies to "formally" implement UML diagrams in PHP? (something like Iconix or any other UML-based dev processes) Will there be limitations when implementing my models in PHP? I don't know anything about ICONIX, but I know about UML, that it doesn't have strict semantics and therefore implementation even in one language might vary, so I don't think there should be one "formal approach to implementation

If the question is to reverse the java code and create UML class diagrams then my recommendation is to use EclipseUML Omondo. This is very expensive but certainly the best.
